Certainly, ‘valley of flowers’ is the right expression for this beauty of nature. And valley of flowers trek is a must include in your trekking destinations.

There will be no valley of flower trek if it was not accidentally discovered by British mountaineers Frank S Smythe, PL Holdsworth, and Eric Shipton reached this valley while returning from a successful expedition of Mt. Kamet in 1931. Frank S Smythe was so fascinated by its sheer natural beauty and variety of flowers that he revisited the valley in 1937 and published a book titled ‘The Valley of Flowers’. His writings made this valley a world famous destination for nature tourism.

The vibrant description of the valley in this book influenced British Botanist Joan Margaret Legge to visit the valley and study the floras there. Unfortunately, she lost her life there while collecting samples. She was buried at the same place and later a shrine was built on her resting place. This shrine is an important place to visit in the valley of flowers trek itinerary.

Although formally discovered in 1931, as per Hindu mythology this is the place from where Lord Hanuman collected Sanjivani. Presently this valley is a part of Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve and also a declared UNESCO World Heritage site. This makes the valley of flowers national park a protected area.
