Itinerary
Day 1: Start your adventure by driving from Dehradun to Raithal, preparing for an unforgettable journey ahead.
The journey from Dehradun to Raithal, the starting point for the Surya Top trek, typically takes about 9 hours by car. Along the way, you'll pass through enchanting forests right after leaving Dehradun. Within the first hour, you'll also drive through the picturesque hill station of Mussoorie, a beloved destination in Uttarakhand. As you travel between Mussoorie and Uttarkashi, you'll come across a captivating viewpoint called the Tingling Point. This spot offers breathtaking vistas of the Garhwal Himalayas. From the peaks near Himachal, such as Swargarohini and adjacent mountains, to Mt Bandarpoonch, Mt Srikanth, the Gangotri Peaks, and the imposing Chaukhamba massif, all the way to the towering Mt Nanda Devi, the panoramic views are truly spectacular. However, these awe-inspiring sights are only visible on exceptionally clear days.
Day 2: Embark on a trek from Raithal to Chilapada, immersing yourself in the wonders of the Himalayas..
As you commence your journey from Raithal, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of Mt. Srikanth and Gangotri 1, 2, and 3 in the distance. These majestic mountains become increasingly prominent as you ascend along the trail towards Chilapada. After a satisfying hot breakfast, your trek begins with a gradual ascent through village fields, eventually leading to a flat grassy clearing with a hand pump after about an hour. Take a short break to rehydrate before continuing on your way. Beyond the water source, the path enters an area with denser tree cover. You'll traverse a dense forest dominated by green and brown oaks (moru and chars) and rhododendrons, creating a lush and diverse woodland. Interestingly, unlike other areas, this forest lacks pine trees. Before reaching Gui, the forest occasionally opens up to reveal small clearings. As you ascend from Gui, the previously hidden mountains on the opposite side gradually come into view. Upon reaching Gui, join the main trail and ascend towards Gui Thatch, a small grassy meadow nestled within the woods. Here, you'll find 5 to 6 huts where shepherds, known as Chania, reside. Adjacent to these huts is a small pond with a mound nearby. You'll also notice igloo-shaped structures belonging to the Forest Department near the Chania huts. Continuing half a kilometer from Gui Thatch, you'll enjoy a leisurely stroll through a stunning rhododendron forest. The terrain allows for a relaxed pace, allowing you to fully appreciate the serene atmosphere of the Himalayan forest
Day 3: Embark on a trek from Chilapada to Devkund via Bakriya Top..
Start your journey today with a gentle climb through the picturesque Dayara meadows, where the breathtaking scenery slowly reveals itself before you. The vast expanse of the meadows unfolds to your right, offering stunning views throughout your trek. After a leisurely two-hour ascent, you'll reach the summit of Bakriya Top, one of the highest points in the meadows.
Standing atop Bakriya Top, you'll be greeted by the magnificent sight of Mt Bandarpoonch. The rolling meadows extend endlessly below, creating a stunning panorama. Take a picturesque walk along the ridge, surrounded by awe-inspiring mountain views. On your right, the expansive Dayara Meadows reveal themselves, while the scenic path leads you towards the serene Devkund campsite. From here, your tent will provide a captivating view of the majestic Mt Bandarpoonch.
Day 4: Set out on a journey from Dev Kund to Siyari, traversing the path that leads you through the majestic Surya Top.
Start your day by waking up early and commencing a gentle climb that takes approximately an hour to complete. This ascent leads you to a magnificent ridge, renowned as one of the most impressive in the country. From this elevated viewpoint, you can behold the stunning vistas of the Gangotri ranges on your right and Yamunotri on your left. During autumn, this ridge transforms into a picturesque pathway adorned with colorful flowers, creating an enchanting atmosphere.
Follow the ridge for 4.5 kilometers, reveling in the excitement of the mountainside hide-and-seek game. As you continue your trek, descend from the ridge and arrive at the day's campsite, Siyari. Upon reaching Siyari, take a moment to settle in, unload your gear, and indulge in a satisfying packed lunch.
Embark on a short but invigorating journey to Surya Top, carrying only your daypack with essential items. The trail commences with a challenging 2.5-kilometer climb from Siyari, guiding you to retrace your steps to the ridge. From there, push forward to reach the summit of Surya Top. The strenuous effort will reward you with breathtaking panoramic views as you triumphantly stand atop the peak. Take ample time to absorb the scenery and savor the moment before descending to Siyari before sunset.
Day 5: Trek from Siyari to Nay.
Start your day at sunrise and follow the same path along the ridge until you reach Devkund. While walking among vibrant wildflowers and towering rocks, you'll be greeted by the majestic Gangotri and Yamunotri mountain ranges. This provides a splendid view of Mt. Bandarpoonch from a remarkable perspective.
Upon arriving at Devkund, take a break to enjoy a meal and rest briefly. The journey to Nayata, primarily on a gentle incline, will take approximately 7 to 8 hours. Along the way, you'll pass through the expansive green fields of Dayara. As night descends, these meadows are illuminated by the golden sunlight, with the distant mountains remaining a constant and magnificent presence.
Day 6: Embark on a trekking adventure from Nayata to Raithal.
Start your day's journey by 9 a.m. and allocate approximately 4 hours to reach Raithal. Departing from the Nayata campsite, follow the trail as it winds beneath the dense forest canopy. After 15 minutes of descent, you'll encounter the rain shelter where you previously branched off towards Barnala during your ascent. From there, continue along the main trail.
Continue for another hour until you arrive at a grassy clearing with a water source. Take a moment to rest and rejuvenate before embarking on the final leg of your journey to Raithal. The distinctive arch of Raithal marks the conclusion of your trek.
Day 7: Drive from Raithal to Dehradun
Start your journey from Raithal after enjoying a cup of tea or coffee. Relish the scenic drive back to Dehradun, with an estimated arrival time of around 7 p.m. on the same day.
